Turtle Release
Few experiences compare to watching a hatchling sea turtle make its first journey to the sea — and Northern Cyprus is one of the most important nesting grounds in the Mediterranean for two protected species, Loggerhead and Green Turtles.
Since 1992, the Marine Turtle Research Group has worked alongside local organisations to monitor and protect these nesting beaches. Release events run through the summer, from late July to early September, when hatchlings just 6–7cm long emerge from their nests and make their way across the sand.
Sun Valley Resort & Residency organises trips to these public release events, including transport and guidance from experts who explain turtle biology and the conservation challenges — habitat loss, pollution and predation — that make this work so important.
Get Involved
Beyond watching a release, guests can take part in beach clean-ups and nest monitoring alongside local and international volunteers — a hands-on way to support the ongoing effort to protect these endangered species.
